The Decoster Agency launched in the summer of 2014 offering a full service program for preteens, teenagers and young adults. The agency evolved as a result of the Building A Better You program ("B.A.B.Y.") that began in 2003 as a personal life skill development program for females ages 10 to 18 years. Shortly after we added the fashion sessions for girls to learn fashion and social etiquette, inclusive of runway, wardrobe, professional make over and photo shoot, fashion shows and presentations. At this time we extended our services to females up to the age of 21.
Our core principal for the program is to use fashion as a segue to explore different standards of beauty with a goal of promoting a healthy body image and an overall positive self esteem.
Our Mission is to empower teens, preteens and young adult females to become confident, responsible, productive women in today's complex society.
Building A Better You was founded and implemented by Ms. Sharon Decoster, a native of Stamford Connecticut. Ms. Decoster served as an Intake Counselor/Facilitator for a nonprofit organization that has also adopted a segment of the program as an intervention/prevention program for at risk girls referred through the Durham County Juvenile Court System. Components of the program has also been implemented with non-profit agencies, alternative schools, charter schools, group homes, churches and community centers in the Durham and Wake county areas.
The beauty of the program is that we provide services to ALL girls from ALL walks of life.
Ms. Decoster currently works professionally for the airline industry and is a Substitute Teacher for Wake County Public Schools when her schedule allows. She is also a Mentor, Life Coach, Talk Show Host and a Motivational Speaker for middle and high schools in North Carolina.
Ms. Decoster has a Bachelors Degree in Business Organizational Management. She currently is the president of the Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society and is a member of the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society Sigma Pi Chapter.
Her profile also includes working for the world's largest international modeling agency for 6 years as a Modeling/Acting Agency Director, Runway Instructor, Talent Scout, Fashion Show Choreographer and Promotions Coordinator. Ms. Decoster attended the American College of Applied Arts for Fashion Merchandising in Atlanta Ga and has a professional modeling career that spans 20 years. She has done print work for Ebony magazine, Links, Hype Hair and Dudley's; and has walked the runway for many professional fashion shows to include Bronner Brother's in Atlanta, David's Bridal, and Carlisle of New York to name just a few. She participated in and judged several pageants and worked with many promotional companies such Whirlpool, Tide and Pepsi.
Ms. Decoster most recently executive produced a talk show for teens called "The Style Talk" which is for both teen males and females that aired on a local channel in the North Carolina area. This show was produced in 2012 and created an empowering platform for teens to discuss and resolve relevant issues that they are affected by daily.
The Building A Better You office opened its first office on Parrish Street, downtown Durham for 1 year before establishing a home office at Northgate Mall for 3 years, on the main level, where the full program was offered to girls from all walks of life. Currently programming is held remotely in the Raleigh and Durham surrounding areas. The overall program is continuously growing and with the successful history of our development sessions we were able to launch the Decoster Agency.
In 2017 we will introduce a new work readiness component for youth aged between 14 to 21. This new component will teach age ready participants job interviewing and workplace skills to land and keep a job once hired. The Decoster Agency will work with a core client list of employers to ensure potential candidates with the agency have learned a certain level of job skills, positive workplace behaviors and good communication skills to perform job responsibilities in a professional manner.
It is Ms. Decoster's belief by tapping into these areas of development at a young age, it will help to guide and direct preteens and teenagers to become confident, focused driven and responsible adults in today's complex and competitive society.
